Who Am I
As Director of the 2nd Surgical Department at HYGEIA Hospital, I have developed a modern, internationally oriented surgical unit that provides comprehensive care across the full spectrum of general surgery. The department has evolved into one of the most specialised surgical centres in Greece, with a particular focus on diseases of the colon and rectum, coloproctology, inflammatory and functional bowel disorders, and advanced proctology. Our practice incorporates the systematic use of robotic and minimally invasive surgical techniques, applying the most advanced technologies available in modern colorectal surgery.
Today, our department represents one of the few organised centres in Greece with the expertise, experience and infrastructure required for the comprehensive surgical management of locally advanced and recurrent colorectal and rectal cancer. In this context, my team and I manage some of the most complex cases referred from across the country, performing multivisceral resections and pelvic exenteration procedures—highly complex operations typically undertaken only in specialised international centres. Our aim is to achieve complete oncological clearance while preserving function and quality of life, following modern onco-functional surgical principles.
The department also has significant expertise in the surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease, including ileal pouch–anal anastomosis (IPAA) and redo pouch surgery, as well as the treatment of complex perianal disease. In addition, we manage functional bowel disorders and pelvic floor conditions, including obstructed defecation syndrome, faecal incontinence, rectal prolapse and chronic pelvic pain, using advanced treatments such as sacral nerve stimulation.
Our surgical practice is based on robotic and advanced laparoscopic techniques, combined with a fully structured multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach. Close collaboration with oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, gastroenterologists, pathologists, urologists and gynaecologists ensures personalised, evidence-based treatment decisions aligned with the highest international standards.
Clinical innovation and excellence in patient care are further supported by my academic and research activities, developed in parallel with my roles at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Imperial College London and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as well as my previous long-standing clinical experience at leading oncology centres in London. This international collaboration enables continuous innovation and access to the latest scientific and surgical advances, positioning the HYGEIA Surgical Department as a national referral centre for complex colorectal surgery.
